When Andrew Glubbey, a sculptor from Merritt Island, Florida, decided to take a cross-country journey, it was not just any trip. Armed with a unique creation—a pear-shaped moped crafted from two-by-fours and aluminum cans—he set off on a mission that blends art, adventure, and a bit of environmental consciousness. This summer, he'll journey over 3,100 miles from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Northwest, showcasing not just the beauty of the open road, but also the joy of imaginative art on wheels.
Why Pears are the Perfect Inspiration
Pears have always been Andrew's favorite fruit. In his own words, he finds them to be "one of the funniest-looking fruits," and their voluptuous shape brings him joy. Reflecting on his artistic journey, Andrew explains, "It's a very happy shape. I've done pear sculptures in the past… it fit perfectly on the bike, and there's enough space for storage inside the pear as well, without having saddlebags on the outside of the sculpture." This whimsical design not only represents his love for the fruit but also presents a functional means of travel.
From Cross-Country Bus to Scooter
Initially, Andrew planned to travel in a bus, but as fuel prices soared in 2026 (reaching as high as $7 a gallon on the West Coast), he pivoted to more economical two-wheeled travel. He recalls, "I was like, there must be a better way. And I'm not afraid of getting a little dirty and a little wet." Riding a scooter not only saves significant cash but also offers freedom and flexibility—a vital aspect for artists on the road searching for inspiration.
Every City, a New Canvas
Andrew doesn't just view this trip as a way to get from point A to B; he sees it as an opportunity to connect with people. On his way to Washington State, he plans to stop in various cities, using his pear-mobile as a moving art exhibition. He believes this journey will allow for meaningful human interaction, stating, "I've pretty much only gotten really good reactions from this particular vehicle… It's been the most friendly car to drive around that I've sculpted on." And with the scooter’s 55 mph speed, Glubbey can pace himself and relish every city’s vibe he visits.

He previously crafted an artistic minivan that earned accolades, but this cross-country ride isn’t about awards; it’s about sharing joy and experience.
